Dearborn Council Candidate Forum Oct. 14 at Bryant

Dearborn Election 2009The Dearborn Council of the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is hosting a city council candidate forum on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Bryant Middle School, 460 N. Vernon.

This is a good opportunity for residents to hear from the 14 people running for Dearborn City Council.

The PTSA held a school board candidate forum on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at DuVall Elementary School.

    Is it just me or are the intersections in the city looking trashy?

    There are like 5 or 6 signs per candidate at Michigan/Outer Drive and Cherry Hill/Telegraph. I’m sure there have to be other intersections just as bad. The two biggest offenders are Tafelski and Sayed. It looks horrible!!! Does anyone know if there is an ordinance for such a thing? If not, there should be!

    See City ordinances 17-97 and Article X11, Sections 5-1350 and 1351. Temporary political signs (and other signs like gargage sales) cannot be posted on public property without permit from the Building and Safety Department (old language not taking in account of the recent re-organization of that department).

    Signs must be removed by candidates that were unsuccessful in the primary election within 15 days of the primary election. Those running in the general election must remove signs within 15 days following the election.

    City Charter, Chapter 12 (Elections) states that no signs, literature, or other political material advocating a candidate may be attached to any City property, nor be distributed within 100 feet of a City building entrance. Penalties are listed under Section 12.8 and 19.6 of a fine up to $500 and/or up to 90 days in jail. THE CITY COUNCIL SHALL PROVIDE FOR THE ENFORCEMENT!

    It is ironic that City Council provides for the enforcement when some of the incumbents are violating the ordinances themselves.
    I took a tour of some of the major roadways in the City today. I found that there are many signs illegally posted on public property – mostly between the sidewalk and curbs. Incumbents Sareini, Tafelski and Shooshanian violate the ordinances, but the biggest offender by far is George Hart. He or his supporters have also gone so far as to post his signs on properties of vacant businesses, mostly in East Dearborn. Other violators were O’Donell, Sayed and Bazzy.

    Take a ride around town and you will see the signs, and the number of signs will undoubtedly get much worse as the election draws near. It is the candidates responsibility to ensure they follow the ordinances.

    Is this a surprise to anyone? The candidates themselves should be fined for every sign that is in violation.

    I agree with you, Maximum penelty $500 and/or 90 days maybe if we hit violators in the pocket books of not just this ordinance but of all the un-enforced ordinances it would make Dearborn a better place to live. and bring in a little income to the city. Oh but wait, if we write tickets and collect fines what will the politicians do. After all the money can only go to one place, the treasury or thier “War Chests/Slush funds”. (wink, wink)

    Of for crying out loud…the signs while not attractive are not that huge of a distraction. People of Dearborn, don’t you have better things to gripe about? Petty, petty, petty! You people must have a LOT of time on your hands!!

    Maybe you are the type of person who thinks we should just run amuck!!!

    Personally, not only do I think it looks trashy and tacky; I look at those signs of overkill and see a candidate(s) trying to overcompensate for something.

    But that’s just me.

    MyTwoSensetoo, the signs are what you think makes Dearborn look trashy? Take a look around…it is a lot more than some political signs that are making the city look trashy! I don’t think I missed the point…the point is that people complain about so much these days. I guess I am not so put out by the signs as I am about other things is all. BTW, I am a very neat and orderly person and don’t like things to run “amuck” but I also try to pick worthwhile causes to bring to a discussion.

    you are right! But so is mytwocents. We need to get rid of the ordinances that no longer are needed or out of date, keep those that still apply and were designed to make Dearborn what its is and what it should be. Enforce them equally and bring a better quality of life back to our neighborhoods and business districts. Sign all over make the roadways look dumpy, that includes all those trash signs we see along the way: garage sale, cheap insurance, jobs, work at hope, etc…. Of course enforcement is good until you’re the one getting the ticket, then its petty, petty petty.
