Work on CSO Project Temporarily Halted

Construction work on the CSO project near Cherry Hill and Brady has been temporarily halted to protect the roads during the spring thaw.

The City of Dearborn sent a note out yesterday to local media explaining why the work had been halted. Residents apparently raised questions on why the work had been stopped.

In a prepared statement, the city said that in order to protect the integrity of the roads during the spring thaw, work on the CSO project in the area bounded by Brady, Cherry Hill, Golf Crest and Cherry Hill Court will be temporarily halted starting March 8 until water under the roadway has evaporated, which should be approximately the first week of April.

City officials say this is necessary because as frost below the road’s surface melts, the road’s base is weakened by the water. Continuing to drive heavy trucks on roads during this time can seriously affect the road’s integrity.

State, county and local governments all mandate that during the thaw, heavy trucks reduce their loads by 35 percent.

Some contractors continue their operation with reduced truck loads in order to comply and some contractors postpone their operation until frost laws are no longer in effect.

The City’s contractor Angelo Iafrat has chosen to postpone their operation since most of it involves heavy transportation of earth and sand, Dearborn officials say.

What a mess this is. I am starting to think it will never be done.

There goes another spoiled Dearborn citizen: Fix my street, but don’t inconvenience me. The fact is that the contractor is trying to squeeze two years worth of work into one so the residents don’t have to put up with the mess for two years. The City doesn’t do these things for fun…

iF THE BIG GUY HAD ANY BALLS, HE WOULD TELL THE FEW RESIDENTS COMPLAINING TO KEEP QUIET, ITS FOR THE BEST INTEREST OF THE COMMUNITY TO GET THIS DONE ASAP PERIOD.

    Spoiled Dearborn Citizen!!!

I think the Citizens of Dearborn have been very patient and for the most part pretty forgiving (considering that everyone keeps getting re-elected).

Here is a website that the taxpayers should visit:
    http://www.epa.gov/med/grosseile_site/indicators/cso.html

    As of August 2009…..
Check out how many CSO Projects are “Operational” compared to Dearborn which are “In Construction”. We are even behind Detroit!

Be sure to make note of the cost too.
    Subtotal – $335,705,000

Many of the other municipalities took advantage of getting the projects done right away thus taking advantage of lower costs and not having to burden the taxpayers.

The fact that the contractor is trying to squeeze two years worth of work into one is of no comfort to me.

Has anyone else heard the oft-repeated urban legend (?) that the CSO project WAS started under the late mayor guido’s watch several years ago, but was conducted using an experimental/non-traditional method brought over from Italy (no, not the Roman aqueducts), resulting in disastrous underground collapsing of infrastructure and pipes. This failed and expensive initial attempt allegedly is why it is costing Dearborn taxpayers so much money and time for the do-over.

  6. RJ says:

it isn’t urban legend. it was started and stopped using a non-traditional method and it failed. set the city back and cost us taxpayers hundreds of millions in the process. oh, yeah one head did roll years and years later. Kurt giberson decided to “retire”, an agreed upon way for him to leave the city and still get a pension. he was the one who pushed this crazy project (he knew nothing about engineering, by the way) and then guido backed it. it was crazy. go some searches in the local papers. it was bad money after more bad money. even better is that the council (many still on the council today) approved the crazy project, even the current mayor.
    one big MESS!!

  7. Wanting Better for Dearborn says:

If this is Guido’s fault can we get ‘him’ to pay for it out of the millions in his war chest or has Kari spent it all?

  8. oldalldayschoolmom says:

Well, there is allegedly/reportedly those millions that were squirreled away into offshore accounts…in places like the Cayman Islands, where international monetary laws really don’t exist…so good luck getting any of that back into Dearborn…

And when did they first break ground on the first contract site, 1996? and here it is 2010?
